Maahefun - Celebration before Ramadan

Maahefun is a traditional celebration marked by Dawoodi Bohra Muslims and some other Muslim groups, particularly in India, Pakistan and East Africa - but also in some places in the Maldives. The event takes place just before the start of the holy month of Ramadan and symbolises the transition from daily routines to a month of fasting, prayer and reflection. For Maahefun, they gather everyone they know and care about for one big communal dinner to celebrate the start of Ramadan. The locals prepare a big buffet, with all the food provided by the invitees 🀩✨

The meaning of Maahefun:

Preparation and purification: It's a way to prepare spiritually and socially for Ramadan.

Forgiveness: It's a time to ask family, friends and the community for forgiveness for any injustices before entering the holy month.

Community and togetherness: The gathering strengthens the bonds between family members and the community πŸ’Œ

How is Maahefun celebrated?

Meals and fellowship: Families and communities gather for a meal before Lent begins.

Social gatherings: Celebrations can take place at home, in mosques or community gathering places.

Traditional dishes: Special dishes such as sheer khurma (a sweet dessert with milk and vermicelli), kebabs, samosas and biryani or other local dishes are often served.

Ritual forgiveness: Some use the occasion to formally ask for forgiveness from their loved ones.

Maahefun varies depending on region and family traditions, but the essence is always gratitude, fellowship and spiritual preparation for Ramadan πŸ‡²πŸ‡»
