Maldives on a budget - but how cheap is it/can it be done?
How much money do you spend in one day + Photo or video of banknotes (1000 MVR)
In the Maldives they use the currency, MVR (Maldivian Rupiah) and USD (US dollars).
We always withdraw the local currency as it is very nice to have for the beach and various supermarkets.
I (Frederikke) have tested it a bit and made sure to buy a few different things, as there was a lot of interest on our social media about how much money you actually spend in one day on Maafushi. however, it varies a lot depending on where and what, and how much you eat. I'd say you can spend around Β£120 - Β£250 per person in a day. It's a big jump, but there's a reason for that.
I've eaten at several different restaurants, but I've had breakfast included in my stay, just like we'll be offering at our hotel. So the price per person is not with breakfast, as most places have breakfast included.
Examples of different meals and what they cost.
Noodle dish incl. water (restaurant) = 44 DKK // 6 USD
2 sausage rolls (local bakery) = 14 DKK // 2 USD
Mocktail/Shake + 0.5 litre. Water (On the beach) = 48 DKK // 7 USD
Ice Magnum (Supermarket) = 21 DKK // 3 USD
Ice cream (Ice cream parlour) = 23 DKK // 3.25 USD
Bounty Chocolate bar (Supermarket) = 11.50 DKK // 1.60 USD
Soda (Supermarket) = 7 DKK // 1 USD
Iced tea (Restaurant) = 35 DKK // 5 USD
Meat platter (Restaurant) = 143 DKK // 20 USD
Pasta dish (Restaurant) = 71 DKK // 10 USD
Pasta dish (Restaurant) = 60 DKK // 8.5 USD
Pizza (Restaurant) = 58 DKK // 8 USD
Water (Supermarket) = 2 DKK // 0.30 USD
In most places there is a service charge and GST, which is added to the price. There are a few places where there isn't - but it's mainly locals who eat there. That's not to say that tourists aren't allowed - but it's some distance away from the other restaurants.
I hope this gave you a small overview of what the prices are and what kind of food is offered around the island.
